Kindergarten through elementary students develop the gross-motor activities needed to control their bodies as they practice running and stopping, skipping and jumping, throwing and catching. They practice following directions, and they learn to follow the rules of various games. Younger children focus on non-competitive activities and “competing with oneself” in order to improve skills. Older students also practice competitive games, learning to handle both winning and losing with composure and grace. Strong emphasis is placed on good sportsmanship and building skills.
Middle school students are exposed to a wide variety of PE activities, so that they can decide which activities they might wish to pursue more fully in high school. Students explore soccer, flag football, softball, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, basketball and volleyball in addition to large group games like capture the flag and other cooperative/New Games. When there is sufficient student interest, we often arrange creative movement classes in addition to outdoor PE.
