Lobbying on Capitol Hill:
7th Grade Meets with Lawmakers to Expand Child Tax Credits

In April 2024, our 7th-grade students embarked on an unforgettable trip to Washington, D.C., where they put their civic engagement skills to the test by lobbying on Capitol Hill. This trip wasn't just a visit to our nation’s capital but a hands-on experience in democracy and advocacy.

Guided by Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), students participated in a lobbying workshop that introduced them to the intricacies of child tax expansion and current legislation. FCNL's approach, rooted in relationship-building, storytelling, and Quaker values, provided a profound foundation for our students as they prepared to meet with North Carolina's Congressional representatives.

Their first day included a guided tour of the Capitol Building as students immersed themselves in role-playing exercises to prepare for their meetings with real members of Congress. Much of their work throughout the week was conducted at the historic Friends Place conference table dating back to 1917-- a humbling experience as they joined the ranks of advocates who have strategized in this very building for decades.

The following day, our young lobbyists met with staff from Rep. David Rouzer's office. Despite this being their first official lobbying experience, the students spoke with clarity and confidence, discussing the importance of the Tax Relief for Working Families Act. Their performance was stellar, and they used this meeting as a solid rehearsal for their next appointment with Sen. Thom Tillis' office. Here, they continued to impress with their ability to connect with elected officials and articulate their advocacy points.

Our students' dedication and poise throughout these meetings exemplify the spirit of active citizenship we strive to instill. Not only did they learn about the legislative process but they also experienced firsthand the impact of civic engagement. This trip was a remarkable demonstration of our students' commitment to making their voices heard and contributing to the greater good.

Most importantly, the achievements of our 7th graders on this trip underscore the importance of teaching young people the value of involvement in democratic processes. We couldn't be prouder of their efforts and the meaningful connections they made on Capitol Hill. This journey was a significant step in their growth as informed and active global citizens.
