Mini Roy Lichtensteins:
Preschool Stargazers Study the Pop Art Movement

Our curious and creative 3- and 4-year-old Stargazer Blue class delved into the vibrant world of pop art this spring, drawing inspiration from iconic artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Teaching team Ciara Goins and Patrick Bradshaw's immersive art lessons introduced students to the bold, colorful, and imaginative styles that define this art movement.

Beginning with an exploration of Andy Warhol's famous soup can paintings, our budding artists learned about Warhol's unique approach to everyday objects and how he transformed them into extraordinary works of art. Armed with brushes and bright paints, students enthusiastically created their own Warhol-inspired soup cans, experimenting with colors and patterns. This project allowed the children to explore concepts of repetition, contrast, and the beauty of everyday items, and the results were as diverse and lively as the class itself!

Next came the comic book world of Roy Lichtenstein. Stargazers were fascinated by his use of Ben-Day dots, bold lines, and speech bubbles to create dramatic and dynamic self-portraits. The class embraced this playful style by creating self-portraits that captured their personalities with a pop art twist. Mimicking Lichtenstein’s technique of using primary colors and graphic elements helped them understand the importance of visual storytelling and character expression.

Throughout these projects, our Stargazers not only learned about influential artists and their techniques but also gained confidence in expressing themselves through art. The process encouraged fine motor skill development and an understanding of artistic techniques such as color mixing, dot painting, and contour drawing. Ciara reflects, "We are so thrilled to see our Stargazers gaining artistic confidence to express themselves!" Their work beautifully illustrates the joy of discovery and the power of creativity as an individual journey—much like the Montessori classroom itself.

These art projects have become a cornerstone of our curriculum, reinforcing the Montessori principles of exploration, creativity, and self-expression. Stop by the Preschool building to check out their colorful creations!
