From Garbage to Gardens, Introducing Our Campus Compost Bins!

From Garbage to Gardens, Introducing Our Campus Compost Bins!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to FSW Family Kat & Skeet Polk for their ingenuity and craftsmanship in building our school an amazing 3-bin composter! Why a multi-compartment design? That's because it allows for the continuous processing of large amounts of material in batches. In a 3-bin composter, material can be turned and mixed between two of the compartments, with the third compartment used for curing and storage.

Thanks to the Polk's generosity, our school is taking another big step toward complete sustainability. Every scrap from our lunches will now get a second life, turning into gold for our garden rather than waste in a landfill.
Kat also led a PA Workshop on Thursday morning, Compost 101, which broke down (pun intended) the how-tos of composting, private and public compost resources, and the legislative work of North Carolina Compositing Council, of which she is Executive Director.

Thank you, Polk Family, for driving us toward greater green-ness!
