Gray Fox on Display at Longleaf

Gray Fox on Display at Longleaf

Have you seen the newest critter on display over at Longleaf Cottage? Thanks to the tremendous generosity of the Hartshorne Family, we now have a beautiful gray fox taxidermy mount!

Last week our 2nd grade students gathered with Ole and his family to see the fox and learn about its history with the Hartshornes, including its original preservation by Ole’s great grandfather! While on loan at Longleaf, the fox will be featured in educational programs and activities for all FSW students and families. Thank you, Hartshornes, for sharing this special family artifact with our community!

A special note from Environmental Education Coordinator Karen Linehan: Southeastern North Carolina hosts two fox species, the gray fox and red fox, which differ somewhat in appearance and natural history. For more information about both foxes, please visit the embedded links above to access their NC Wildlife profiles
