Time with Tony - 8/29

 

This week, I want to begin with a heartfelt thank you to the parents who generously donated snacks and drinks to stock the two kitchens on our campus. Your generosity and thoughtfulness are deeply appreciated.

These gifts may seem simple, but they mean a great deal to our teachers and staff. A snack or drink in the middle of a busy afternoon offers a small opportunity to pause between classes, meetings, supervision, lesson preparation, and the many other responsibilities that fill a school day. More importantly, it communicates care and reminds our teachers that the work they do is seen and valued.

That recognition matters.

Teaching has always been demanding work, but the profession has changed significantly in recent years. Teachers are now asked to do far more than plan lessons and assess student learning. They respond to a wider range of academic, behavioral, social-emotional, linguistic, and developmental needs, often within the same classroom. They differentiate instruction, provide accommodations, communicate with families, support students through personal challenges, manage technology, complete documentation, participate in meetings, and continually adapt to new expectations.

Teaching is not simply a job that begins when students arrive and ends when they leave. It requires preparation, presence, judgment, emotional investment, creativity, patience, and sustained care.

I also want to acknowledge my own responsibility in making this year more demanding. By reducing the total number of staff members, I have asked more of the people who remain. Those decisions were necessary for the health and sustainability of our school, but necessary does not mean easy or without consequences. It has created significantly more work across the board, and I recognize that reality.

I am grateful for the professionalism, flexibility, and determination with which our faculty and staff have responded. I am also grateful for the energy our newest employees have brought to our community. They have arrived with fresh ideas, enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to contribute. Their presence is already strengthening our work and adding new energy to the life of our school.

To every teacher and staff member, thank you.

Thank you for preparing carefully, staying late, starting early, solving problems, encouraging students, supporting families, and helping one another. Thank you for the patience you show when a student is struggling, the joy you bring when a student succeeds, and the countless acts of kindness that often go unnoticed.

Most of all, thank you for the care and love you show to each and every student, and to one another. That care is at the heart of our school. It is what makes this community special, and it is why the work you do matters so deeply.
