Lower School
We emphasize learning through doing, encouraging students to engage their senses and interact with and care for their environment.
Welcome to the Lower School at Friends School of Wilmington! From Kindergarten through fifth grade, our children flourish by forming deep connections with their class communities and the world around them. Our dedicated educators focus on fostering cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development, believing that attention to the whole child leads to exceptional outcomes.
Our curriculum and culture are deeply rooted in Quaker values of simplicity, equity, and peace. Research-based pedagogy and an understanding of child development are designed to meet each child's needs. We emphasize learning through doing, encouraging students to engage their senses and interact with and care for their environment. By exploring and asking relevant questions, our students develop skills in inquiry, reasoning, advocacy, problem-solving, and communication.
Each day begins with a Morning Meeting to help students settle in with their classmates, connect, and prepare for learning. This includes practicing finding stillness as a whole group giving opportunities for listening to our inner voice. The school day includes vigorous academics, workshop lessons, small group work, independent projects, and ample recess time outdoors. Students learn to resolve conflicts, collaborate with others, and evaluate their progress. Class jobs foster a strong sense of service to the community and environmental responsibility. Each classroom ends its day with a Closing Meeting for reflection on the day’s learning.
Our program's heart lies in fostering a community where all feel valued, and our actions reflect our school's mission. All learning experiences are meaningful and aim to help students see the relevance and integration of passionate, lifelong learning with courage, integrity, and love. We look forward to an exciting and enriching year ahead!
