Middle School Language Arts classes are structured as interactive workshops that immerse students in both writing and reading. Each writing assignment is thoughtfully paired with reading tasks, where students delve into literary genres ranging from classic novels and contemporary fiction to nonfiction and poetry.

Students gain experience in traditional, multimedia, and self-directed projects, analyzing texts and responding creatively or critically through essays, presentations, or digital media. This integrated approach to reading and writing helps students develop a comprehensive understanding of how these skills enhance and inform each other. Our math curriculum is centered around Michigan State University's Connected Mathematics program, which is designed to build students' proficiency in algebra and other key mathematical concepts like number systems, fractions, and linear equations. We focus on developing students' ability to think logically and analytically, while also teaching them to effectively communicate their problem-solving strategies. Concepts are explored through a combination of visual, symbolic, and verbal approaches, supported by hands-on projects that encourage deeper understanding.

Critical thinking skills rooted in the scientific method are at the heart of our inquiry-based curriculum, which follows the OpenSci program. From the microscopic world of cells and chemical compounds to the vast systems of Earth’s natural environments, the mysteries of quasars and quarks to the universal laws of force and energy, our students are encouraged to view the world with a sense of wonder and order. They maintain detailed observation journals and are consistently challenged to ask questions and engage in discussions with their peers and teachers, fully embracing the scientific process as a means to understand the interconnectedness of the world around them. Our unique coastal environment offers abundant opportunities for hands-on exploration, connecting students to the natural world and their community in meaningful ways.

Our social studies curriculum takes a place-based approach, guiding students through a broad exploration of geographical and historical topics, from pre-Columbian North America to contemporary issues facing coastal North Carolina. We also offer opportunities for cultural exploration, expanding students’ understanding of world geography, religious beliefs and practices, economic systems, and political structures. Weekly current events discussions, which span local, state, and international topics, help students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while refining their skills in reading comprehension, critical analysis, research writing, and public speaking.

Students participate in biweekly Spanish language practice, engaging in role-play activities and interactive exercises to enhance their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The curriculum progressively introduces vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, ensuring that students build a strong linguistic foundation. Cultural elements, including celebrations, traditions, and customs from Spanish-speaking countries, are integrated into the lessons to foster cross-cultural understanding and global awareness.

Middle School students also have the opportunity to apply for a study abroad program in the Dominican Republic. This immersive experience allows them to practice their Spanish in real-world settings, interact with native speakers, and deepen their appreciation of the language and culture they’ve studied. Students not only advance their language skills but also gain valuable insights into global cultures and perspectives.

Unique to our school culture is a profound love of song that unites our campus community across all grade levels. Our music curriculum contributes to this dynamic, as students explore various musical genres, learn to play instruments, and engage in choral and ensemble performances. Above all, we emphasize creativity, expression, and teamwork, empowering students to become confident musicians and instilling a sincere appreciation for the transformative power of music.

Students are introduced to a wide range of artistic techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpting, and mixed media. They study the works of renowned artists from different cultures and time periods, drawing inspiration from their styles and themes. Students actively participate in art projects that encourage self-expression and creativity, allowing them to experiment with colors, shapes, and textures. They learn to develop their artistic vision, work with various materials, and refine their skills through collaborative feedback in student-led "gallery talks."

Our PE classes follow the SPARK model— Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids—a research-based program designed to be inclusive, active, and developmentally engaging. We prioritize strategies to adapt games and activities to fit the physical abilities of all students. Students are assessed based on participation, cooperation, teamwork, enthusiasm, demonstrative abilities.

Our environmental education program, guided by award-winning educator Karen Linehan at the Longleaf Center for Environmental Learning, introduces middle school students to the wonders of nature. Students engage in activities such as stream studies, building wildlife habitats, and planting native gardens. These hands-on experiences help them explore local ecosystems, learn about native plants and wildlife, and develop a strong connection to the environment while fostering a sense of responsibility for protecting our planet.

Our Social-Emotional Learning curriculum is based on the MindUP and Developmental Designs programs. These approaches help Middle School students understand and manage their emotions, develop empathy, and build strong relationships with both peers and adults. Through mindfulness exercises, conflict resolution strategies, and cooperative activities, students learn to navigate challenges, make responsible decisions, and contribute positively to their community. We believe that emotional well-being is central to a child’s educational experience, and we strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters resilience, self-awareness, and a strong sense of belonging.

Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion curriculum, guided by the Learning for Justice framework, focuses on creating a school culture where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.
