A record turnout of FSW students, parents, teachers, and volunteers came out to support our Lower School and Middle School Science Olympiad Teams on Saturday, March 4th and Saturday, March 11th for the New Hanover Regional tournaments. Founded in 1984, Science Olympiad is the premier team STEM competition in the nation, providing standards-based challenges to 6,000 teams at 425 tournaments in all 50 states.
Our LS students were strong finishers in many events, medalling in 3rd place in the pasta bridge challenge--Bridge-a-Roni--and taking first place in solar system knowledge, Sky Quest! Meanwhile, our Middle School scientists competed against 24 other private, public, and charter schools from southeastern NC to take home top 10 finishes in Anatomy & Physiology, Bridge, and Storm the Castle!
We are so proud of these students who eagerly embraced the challenge to prepare for and compete in their events. Immense gratitude goes to Rob Ward and Clair McCalla who worked tirelessly to prepare the teams. And, of course, thank you to all of our incredible parent volunteers who helped students navigate Ashley High School and the UNCW campus to find the various labs and competition spaces. We'll be back again next year!
