Meet the Board

Teri Butler
Teri Butler (Quackenbush) joined the Board in 2022. She has a background in education, teaching biology at every level, in four different states. Teri is a member of Wilmington Friends Meeting, where she serves on the Board and acts as the Recording Clerk.  Retired since 2019, Teri divides her time between sewing projects and letting her dogs in and out.  
Jonathan Clay
Jonathan graduated from UNCW in 2007 with a degree in International Business. He served FSW as our basketball coach, PE teacher, and Afterschool Program Coordinator before moving on to return to the business world in 2018. Jonathan joined the board in the same year and appreciates remaining connected to Friends School in this capacity.
Karen Cumberbatch
Karen has a 29-year career in independent school administration including 25 years in Quaker schools. She is currently the head of school at Carolina Friends School. Before that she worked at Sandy Spring Friends School, where she was Head of Upper School. Karen has led school-wide strategic planning and implementation, clerked numerous school committees, and organized and developed a wide range of student leadership and staff professional development initiatives. Karen grew up in Jamaica, New York in a family deeply committed to education. She received her BA in Africana Studies from Cornell University, and an MA in Afro-American Studies from UCLA. She also earned a Graduate Certificate in Independent School Leadership from Johns Hopkins University and completed the Institute for Engaging Leadership with the Friends Council on Education. She is currently also serving on the boards of Friends Council on Education and North Carolina Association of Independent Schools.
Gina Fimbel
Gina Fimbel joined the Board in 2022. Gina moved to Wilmington in 2007 and is a Certified Master Social Worker with experience working in child protective services, foster care, and a homeless shelter for women and children. She currently works for an Atlanta-based racial literacy organization called Be the Bridge. Gina is a wife and mother to five children. When she's not busy working, she loves books, accurate history, watching her kids play sports, and her adorable and anxious dog, Gucci. 
Joe Finley
Joe Finley has lived in Wilmington, NC since 2002 and is motivated by a desire to see true racial equity in our community. He is working with several local organizations in an effort to instill long-term economic and cultural change in our region. He is currently on the board of directors for the Cape Fear Collective, Friends School of Wilmington and the Northside Food Cooperative. Joe also supports several community initiatives that include; equity in education, entrepreneurship, Black history in Wilmington and public art. Joe is a co-founder of CastleBranch and tekMountain, where he has held a variety of roles, including vice president of sales and president. He is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill where he majored in English literature. Joe, his wife Whitney and his children, Vivian and Luca, truly love the Cape Fear region and are committed to making it a better place for everyone. Joe is the Board's Finance Committee Clerk.
Beth Jaskolka
Beth Jaskolka joined the Board of Trustees in 2020 after joining the Friends School of Wilmington community in 2015.  She has two children in the lower school at FSW and loves to hear all about their days spent at school.  Beth graduated from the University of Florida with her undergraduate degree before moving onto the University of South Florida medical school. She completed her Pediatric residency at the University of North Carolina in 2008 and has worked as an outpatient pediatrician ever since that time.  She currently works at Seaside Pediatrics in Wilmington as a part-time pediatrician.  She is also involved in and has a special place in her heart for the nonprofit Be The Adult, an organization that provides blueprints for calm and effective parenting so that children can grow into their best selves. Beth is the Board's Recording Clerk.
Doug Jennings
Doug Jennings joined the Board in June 2013. Doug and his wife, Viveka, moved to Wilmington in 2011 following a career of teaching and heading independent schools.  He served as Head of School for Indian Springs School in Alabama and for Park Tudor School in Indiana. He is currently a consultant for Educators’ Collaborative, a national firm advising independent and charter schools.  Doug has been a board member of the National Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools. Doug is active on the Advancement Committee is Clerk of the Board.
Karrie Jo Manson
Karrie was born and raised in Greensboro with family roots in Pleasant Garden. She is a Guilford College graduate and has a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from The College of New Jersey. Following her years as a family therapist in Bucks County, PA, Karrie Jo worked as Senior Director of Alumni Relations and Engagement at Guilford College. She is currently the Development Director at the Piedmont Land Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting land to help ensure clean water for our communities, habitat for our wildlife, locally grown food, parks and trails, and other places for people to connect with nature. In addition to meeting people and hearing their stories, Karrie Jo loves hiking and exploring, hanging out with dogs and horses, playing tennis and spending time with her adult children, Julia and Joseph.
Lindsey McCoy
Lindsey McCoy joined the Board in 2017. She, her husband Matt, and son Griffin Frye, moved to Wilmington in 2015 from the Bahamas. There she served as the Executive Director of environmental nonprofits and a nonprofit consultant. She is currently the CEO and Co-founder of Plaine Products, a personal care company that is working to eliminate single-use plastic from the bathroom. Lindsey has a Masters in Public Affairs from Indiana University and is a board member of the Plastic Ocean Project, Friends of the Environment and active in the Citizen’s Climate Lobby.  Frye graduated from Friends School in 2021. 
Steve McIntosh
Prior to moving to Wilmington in 2007, Steve served for 8 years as a Surface Warfare Officer in the US Navy. While on active duty, Steve was stationed in Pearl Harbor, HI, and in San Diego, CA, then served as a range safety officer with the Marine Corps. Steve joined GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy in 2006 as a Systems Engineer, and has since held roles in Project Management, Product Management and Development, and is currently a Senior Director of Outage Services. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a B.S. in Political Science and holds an MBA from the University of North Carolina – Wilmington. Steve and his wife Sarah have three children who attend FSW and one graduate. They are active members of the FSW and greater Wilmington community who value and appreciate all that the school and region have to offer.
Cannon Morgan
Cannon was raised in Jacksonville, North Carolina and is a 1994 graduate of Guilford College. He has two children, Perry and William, who is a 2018 graduate of Friends School of Wilmington. Cannon has been on the Finance Committee since 2017 and joined the board in 2018. He is currently Co-clerk of the Board and clerks the Head of School Search Committee. Cannon has worked in the Insurance and Financial Planning field for over 25 years.
Susan Nance
Susan Nance joined the Board in 2022.  Susan was born in the Cape Fear region and after living and working abroad in various countries has owned and managed a local HVAC company for the past 20 years in the greater cape fear area.  She has a BA in psychology, MA in teaching English as a second language, HVAC and Electrical Contractors license.  She and her wife Shelia have a daughter in the lower school and enjoy travel, water activities, and the arts.
Marilyn Sheerer, PhD
Marilyn has worked in higher education academic institutions for almost 30 years. She has served as a faculty member, a department chair, a dean and a provost at four different universities. Most recently, she held the role of Provost at UNCWilmington from 2015-2020. Presently, she is a Professor of Educational Leadership in the Watson College of Education. Her commitment to Friends School, our values, and our focus on quality is strong. She is particularly thrilled that her granddaughters, Addie and Molly, have benefited from the Friends School experience since their start in the early childhood program.
Cara Stretch
Cara's family joined the FSW community in 2020 when her son entered the lower school. She grew up in Baltimore, MD where she attended Quaker Meeting and participated in Quaker youth group activities. A passion for every human having access to everything they need to live a full life has driven Cara's career in nonprofit work. She's helped individuals create and sustain housing situations, advocated for fair consumer laws as well as worked to ensure equitable access to fresh, healthy food. Currently, she works for Cape Fear Collective as their director of programs. Cara joined the Board of Trustees in 2022. 
Crystal Walton
Crystal Walton joined the board in August 2022. She has been a Friends School parent for two years and is delighted to serve the community in an official capacity. Crystal is the CFO of Element Outdoor Living, a design-build landscape company based in Wilmington. Her professional background ranges from serving as the Executive Director of a non-profit group focused on development technologies to COO of an analytics consulting firm. When not working or driving the kids around, Crystal loves to travel.
