Join FSW alumna and studio owner Emma Brinkley at A Little Twisted Pottery where campers will learn more advanced clay techniques using the pottery wheel and develop hand sculpting techniques.

This camp will provide chess lessons adapted to your student's age and chess level. In this camp, your child will learn the basics of chess, openings, and strategy. Beginning with free play to evaluate familiarity and comfort level, we will layer in skills and work with kids to learn to apply them to gameplay. Next, variant games are a great way to keep learners interested through fun and playful games. Throughout this program, we will work with your child to connect chess concepts so they internalize the game's rules and overarching framework. Total beginners will have a blast without chess experience. Advanced chess wizards will develop a deeper understanding of the game. Everyone will graduate with knowledge and joy for the game.

Animals are remarkable builders and create structures using sticks, mud, tree bark, silk and even spit! We'll learn about some amazing animal architects and practice creating our own works of art too alongside FSW environmental educators Karen and Julie. This camp will include one outing in our FSW bus to a local natural area. 

STEAM explorations and activities for the budding engineer, mathematician, and scientist in your family. Campers will learn the steps that engineers take when trying to solve problems and work together to reach solutions with 2nd grade teacher Eileen. Includes at least 1 hour of outside play daily.

Young drafters will be introduced to both mechanical and architectural drafting basics. This will include hand-drafting, the use of drafting tools, spatial thinking, and attention to detail. The camp will be fully packed with fun activities that will give your child an opportunity to learn traditional drafting practices, drawing in scale, basic lettering, line weights, standard graphic notations, dimensions, and annotations. By the end of the camp, your inspiring architects will be able to make technical drawings, some graphic art, read and scale drawings, as well as draw an object that is described with two or three views; select the proper drawing scale, views, and layout; draw an object that has an inclined surface; draw an object containing circles and arcs; correctly identify views of an object; create orthographic and isometric projections utilizing the necessary views.

Join us for a week of fun Under the Sea with 1st grade teacher/Sea Captain Julia! Campers will dive into the world of marine life as they explore the ocean through art, music, books, and play. Please send your camper with closed toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty.

Outdoor playtime in water and mud with Kindergarten teacher Jenny! We will be creating mud kitchen recipes, playing in the sprinkler and with water balloons, experimenting with bubbles, paint, and playdoh! All outdoor messy fun! Campers need a snack, reusable water bottle, change of clothes and towel and must wear dri-fit clothing (no bathing suits) and close-toed shoes they can easily take on and off. 

Fun with Flag Football will cover the basics of flag football to route running, defensive formations, and teamwork. All skill levels are welcome. Players will get to participate and leave with some football knowledge. There will be a combination of classroom work and field time to help all players understand concepts and plays. The final day will include a game-style scrimmage! Coached by FSW Facilities Manager and YMCA Volunteer Flag Football Coach Mike.

In this camp, children will build their little muscles with playdough, scissors, Q-tips and more. 4th grade teacher Stephanie will help students to form letters, write their names, and create art using a variety of mediums.

We will paint with acrylics and watercolor and explore all sorts of media like collage work and sculpture with found objects and recycled materials. We may experiment with tie-dye or batik processes as well as different printmaking methods. Projects may include painting self-portraits on canvas, building art “robots “ from found objects, designing “monster” pillows, making faux stained glass vinyl window art, learning mono-printing and so much more! Brooks Koff, just like her art, is a tapestry of color! Her work has been featured in many local magazines, like Wilma, Wrightsville Beach Magazine, Salt, and Haven (the Bald Head Island Magazine), as well as highlighted on a nationally syndicated PBS show. This camp incorporates ballet, tap and jazz technique while also encouraging self-expression and creativity. High energy music is used throughout the class to get dancers moving and having fun. The camp will conclude on Friday with a dance recital.

The day will be structured to keep the young minds occupied through play and activities that emphasize learning to count, identify numbers, and compare and manipulate quantities which are key early numeracy skills*. These skills are powerful predictors of mathematical learning and performance in school-aged children. In addition to honing down on early numeracy skills, campers will be introduced to more advanced skills like geometric thinking, logic puzzles, and word problems.

Have you ever wanted to be a photographer? Well, this is the camp for you! In this specialty digital photography camp, we’ll learn the basics of digital photography in all of its forms. Every day, we’ll take pictures of campus, go on nature walks, and learn about photography. We’ll discuss composition, lighting and other core strategies that allow professionals to take incredible photos. Along the way, we’ll also have an editing and exhibition day!

Look through the eyes of a scientist as you explore the world around you with Montessori preschool teacher Ciara as the principal investigator. Campers will complete science experiments and record their findings in their own scientific journal. Nature exploration and traditional Montessori activities will also be included in their day to support independence and strengthen fine motor skills through hands-on experiences and outdoor adventures. Activities include superhero identity and costume creation; heroic crafts; obstacle courses and strength & endurance training; hero’s story time; superhero rescue mission games; and a special guest appearance by local superheroes (police officers and fire fighters)!

Pre-algebra will be introduced as well to the campers with stronger early numeracy skills. This is a wonderful camp for children who get excited about math and for those who are unsure or hesitant when it comes to math.

Nature exploration and traditional Montessori activities will also be included in their day to support independence and strengthen fine motor skills through hands-on experiences and outdoor adventures. Have you ever wanted to start your own business or website? In this camp for budding entrepreneurs, that’s exactly what you’ll do! You’ll work with a classmate to come up with a simple company idea, taking it as far as it will go before the camp ends. You’ll create a business plan, enlist friends and family, and set up everything you need to be a junior entrepreneur: a first email address, a basic app or website, and a presentation. Ultimately, you’ll share your idea with friends and family, work hard to get a first customer, and present all your progress to the whole camp!

Using creative and imaginative games, Soccer Shots camp will focus on basic soccer skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting.  Instructors will also highlight a positive character trait each day, such as respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, and willingness to help in order to build a well-rounded athlete and child.

With 2nd grade teacher Eileen as the game master, campers will explore established board games that are less known in America with the goal of creating their own game to bring home by the end of the week. Includes at least 1 hour of outdoor play.

Join Rachel as you work to design and display your own wearable pieces of art! Campers will learn design basics, like colors, patterns, styles, and fabrics. Projects during the week will include creating inspiration boards, transforming t-shirts, making over tote bags, creating jewelry, and meeting with local artisans for inspiration. Camp concludes with a runway walk fashion show.

Learn the basics fundamentals of soccer from semi-professional soccer players with Port City Football Club.  Participants will participate in drills and utilize these skills through scrimmages and games.

Explore the rainforest environment with 4th grade teacher Stephanie.  Campers will discover what makes a rainforest, including different kinds of plants and animals. Activities include crafts, musical instruments, and designing a cool terrarium!
